On April 16th, the I-SEAMORE project successfully hosted the webinar “AI Operations in Border Management”, attracting 96 participants from EU institutions, agencies, and research projects. The event offered a deep dive into how artificial intelligence (AI) is shaping the future of border operations, with a special focus on end-user perspectives.
The webinar brought together key representatives from four European projects – I-SEAMORE, BAG-INTEL, METEOR, and ODYSSEUS – to explore innovative AI solutions aimed at improving border security, identity verification, and detection systems.
Main Highlights
BAG-INTEL: Georgios Bardas, Senior Software Engineer at Netcompany-Intrasoft and technical coordinator of the BAG-INTEL project, presented the development of a unified, real-time platform powered by advanced Computer Vision and Convolutional Neural Networks. The platform, designed by Legind Technologies and implemented by Netcompany-Intrasoft, aims to streamline industrial AI applications in border environments.
I-SEAMORE: The host project showcased a strong line-up of speakers, including Ricard Munné (EVIDEN), José Ramón Soto Cascales (AEAT), Alexander Mackenzie (UKBF), Marina Andeva (ISIG), and Valentin Micu (RBP). They presented I-SEAMORE’s approach to deploying AI in maritime and border surveillance, highlighting ethical frameworks and operational needs from diverse end-user partners.
METEOR: Daoiz Zamora, CEO and co-founder of MION Technologies, emphasized how the METEOR project, supported by four EU customs authorities, is using AI-powered detectors to identify illicit substances in containers. With over 15 years of experience in the field, Daoiz showcased real-world success stories where METEOR’s technology made a tangible impact.
ODYSSEUS: Niklas Palaghias, CEO of Quadible, introduced ODYSSEUS’s behavioral AI solution for seamless identity verification at borders. The project leverages continuous behavioural biometrics – such as typing and swiping patterns – to verify user legitimacy, aiming for a frictionless and secure border-crossing experience.
Policy Perspective from the European Commission
The webinar also featured Giulio Mancini from DG HOME, who provided insights into the European Commission’s policy direction on AI in border management. His presentation focused on innovation strategies and regulatory considerations essential for the safe and effective integration of AI in this field. The session was publicised among Commission services (DG HOME, DG MARE), EU agencies (Frontex), and related projects – fostering valuable cross-sector collaboration.
The I-SEAMORE team extends its sincere thanks to all speakers, participants, and partners who contributed to this important dialogue. Together, we are laying the groundwork for safer, smarter, and more ethical borders in Europe and beyond.
