The I-SEAMORE project successfully hosted an insightful webinar titled “Use of AI in Border Security,” bringing together industry leaders and project partners to explore the transformative potential of AI-driven solutions in strengthening border security. Held virtually via Zoom, on October 30th, the event attracted a varied audience eager to understand how Artificial Intelligence (AI) can transform border security measures and improve safety, efficiency, and transparency in a rapidly changing world. With an agenda packed with cutting-edge presentations from renowned experts, the 1.5-hour webinar provided a comprehensive overview of AI’s role in maritime applications, customs operations, and border control.
The event opened with a warm welcome from Josipa Arapović, representing F6S – the I-SEAMORE partner responsible for Communication & Dissemination activities, who introduced the speakers and set the stage for an informative session highlighting some of Europe’s leading projects in border security technology.

- I-SEAMORE: AI Solutions for Maritime Security
Gregor Pavlin from Thales Group presented on behalf of the I-SEAMORE project, shedding light on AI-based solutions designed to improve situation awareness in maritime settings. Pavlin outlined the primary motivations for using AI in maritime security, the various AI techniques integrated into I-SEAMORE, and approaches to building trustworthy AI systems that can be evaluated effectively. This segment underscored the pressing need for advanced, reliable technology in maritime operations.
- ODYSSEUS: AI-Driven Decision Support Systems in Border Security
Philippos Orfanoudakis of SQD spoke about ODYSSEUS, a project leveraging AI-driven decision support systems (DSS) to facilitate smooth and secure border crossing. He highlighted the role of Explainable AI (XAI) in turning decision-making processes more transparent and understandable for border authorities, alongside the benefits for travellers, such as reduced wait times and improved security measures.

- BAG-INTEL: Revolutionising Customs Operations
Henrik Larsen from Legind Technologies introduced BAG-INTEL, an AI-powered customs solution aimed at transforming baggage control at international airports. The presentation covered the operational scenarios where BAG-INTEL’s AI detection and risk assessment features add value, offering efficient and non-intrusive solutions for customs operations.

- FLEXI-Cross: AI for Adaptive Border Control
George Agapiou from WINGS ICT SOLUTIONS, representative from FLEXI-Cross project, presented on AI’s application in modular border control processes. Agapiou discussed how AI is used in computer vision for detecting unexpected patterns and onboard sensors for real-time data analysis, as well as GUIs designed for multimodal, AI-based pattern detection.
